Spring Into Cleaning: How to Look After a Resin Driveway

Spring Into Cleaning: How to Look After a Resin Driveway - Resin Mill

A resin-bound driveway is a hard-wearing surface solution that can complement any property. It offers excellent benefits, including bespoke designs, fantastic drainage, durability and minimal maintenance. Even though resin driveways are straightforward to look after, it doesn’t mean there is no maintenance at all.

Here is a quick guide on how customers should look after a resin driveway and how to keep it in tip-top condition for many years.

Cleaning a resin driveway

For general cleaning, removing leaves, sand, soil, and materials can usually be swept away with a stiff brush. Hosing down resin surfaces with clean water will also clean the surface and is the most common maintenance needed for a resin driveway.

If your driveway suffers a stain or a more stubborn cleaning issue, we have our aftercare and maintenance guide below for reference.

Aftercare and maintenance for resin driveways

Resin-bound driveways are minimal maintenance, but we have some tips to make them last longer and look fantastic.

Here is a list of everyday spills or materials customers may ask about on their new driveway and the actions needed for general cleaning advice.

Material Action required
Acid – examples: drain or patio cleaners Immediately flush with water and if a strong acid has spilt onto the driveway use a jet wash over and over the area to flush away
Algae & Moss Jet wash with water
Drinks Flush with water and brush away
Cement / Mortar / Concrete If not cured, try to clean it as quickly as possible using water and brush.

If cured, break up as much as possible with care to not damage the resin surface. Scrape away cured material and use a brick or surface cleaner. Leave for a few minutes then flush with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

Chewing Gum You can use a freeze spray and carefully chip off old chewing gum.

If chewing gum has stained the surface, use washing powder and water and jet wash away.

Oil / Grease Place an absorbent cloth over the area and apply household detergent. Use a stiff brush and flush with warm water. Repeat until the mark has been removed.
Paint – emulsion or oil based Emulsion paint – Flush immediately with cold water. If ingrained in the resin surface use a household cleaner with a stiff brush and flush using warm water.

Oil paint – if a fresh spill, use an absorbent cloth, soaked in white spirit and dab on the spill. Repeat if needed and flush with cold water. If oil-based paint has dried, try a jet washer and mild detergent.

NEVER USE PAINT STRIPPER!

Petrol & Diesel Flood the area with water and a mild detergent. Allow time for residue to evaporate and assess any damage to the resin surface.
Rust Apply vinegar or lemon juice to the stained area or a 5% oxalic acid can be applied carefully. Leave for 20 mins and remove with water using a cloth. Repeat if needed. Rust can be difficult to remove and if in doubt contact us.
Soil Remove the bulk with a brush and shovel and the rest with cold water and a brush.
Tyre Marks Wipe with a cloth soaked in white spirit and flush with warm water and mild detergent
Weeds Use normal weed killer but avoid ferrous sulphate-based products as can cause staining.
